GENERAL
INFORMATION AND CLIMATE
Worcester was
established in 1820 with a rich British and French history. It
is home to approximately 100 000 people. Worcester is also the
largest wine growing region in South Africa accounting for 20% of
the total production.
One of the main
reasons why the wine industry is so successful in the Breederiver
Valley, where Worcester is situated, is the climate. Very cold
winters, July - September, keeps the vines dormant until spring
time. Snow-capped mountains is one of the most beautiful
features of this small town. Spring time is evident by the
small vine leaves appearing in the vineyards round about the end of
September. A very hot summer season assures that the
grapes grow to their full potential - very exciting to see the vines
heavily laiden by their crop.
If you
enjoy cycling, this is the time to cruise at leisure past these
vineyards, especially those vineyards where "Table Grapes" are
cultivated just for export - "mind-blowing
stuff!"
If photography
is your thing, this is the place to be! The mountain range
that surrounds Worcester is like a painting on an artist's
canvas. There is this magical feel about the mountains.
Just too beautiful to put into words.
